Market research can be classified as either primary or secondary in nature and the former is the new or innovative research that is performed to answer certain research questions and it consists of questionnaires, interviews and surveys.

Primary sources of information are usually obtained from original studies, documents, by observation or shortly the source in which the stated information appeared first. For example, if a scientific research study is done, this source is the first report that is formulated by the scientists who conduct researches.

On the other hand, a secondary source is a document is one that addresses the information obtained from primary sources and these are mostly documents that report, assesses and interprets the primary sources of information.

To explain these two terms in common languages, for instance, if one does a research study on a set of students who are engineering graduates and report the results obtained in an essay form they provide the primary information source. Conversely, if someone else uses the information other has collected for his or her research purposes, this sources becomes a secondary source of information. However, the type of sources to be used depends on the type of essay or research work to be written.

Although most secondary sources are usually accepted by all, primary sources are preferred over secondary and compulsorily in some cases primary sources must be mandatorily used. Most of the sources discovered during research studies are secondary in nature and it is usually possible to keep a track of the original source and this is done mainly by referencing of works that are mentioned in the paper. These links usually lead you to the main source.
